CPU Performance Comparison

What is/are the most feasible methods to interpret or to gauge the performance of the CPU based on benchmarks?
Given the following CPUs:

AMD k6-2 500
AMD Thunderbird 900
Cyrix M II 333
Celeron 700
AMD Duron 700
Pentium III 800
Pentium 166

What i mean here is that how do i actually compare those chips to achieve an unbiased judgement for example should i used a number of benchmarks for each of the chips and then used certain criteria to group those chips and determine their performance  by benchmark?
