Help needed with ATI x300 driver

I bought an ATI x300 card for my Lenovo T400 dock, because I needed a short PCIe x16 card.  When I power up my Lenovo T400 laptop on the dock, XP asks for a VGA driver--but I never can get it to work.  I tried to install the ATI x300 CD that came with it, but when I pick the .exe for 32 bit XP and run the ATI install program, it eventually cancels out, saying it cannot find the appropriate hardware.  I also downloaded the driver setup from the ATI site--a file named 9-11_legacy+xp32-64.wdm.exe--and it does complete the ATI install.  But when I run the ATI console, it never sees the x300 card.  And, in device manager, it still shows a VGA device with the yellow question mark.  I have tried to 'update driver' and search for the right driver file--which I assume is an .inf file--but I never can find one that will work.

In case it matters, I believe my laptop has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series graphics.  This makes me wonder if the ATI software I'm trying to install is having problems due to this.

BTW, I feel sure that XP really is seeing this x300 card that's installed in the dock, because if I remove it from the dock, I no longer get the message asking for the drivers, and I no longer get the yellow question mark device in device manager.

Any idea what is going on and what to try next?

You should first install the software and then connect the card.
