DELL Inspiron 8600 Screen Contrast How do I change it manually from the keyboard

How do I manually change the screen contrast for a DELL Inspiron 8600. I think I am having problems with the screen not allowing me to see the display. So far I have been able to connect to a Infocus projector and see the screen that way but when I shut down the screen comes back black with the faintest of windows still barely visible in the display. They are so faint I cannot read the text on them. I can only make out the shape and size of the Windows XP Pro SP3 login window etc. Can anyone tell me how to get into the keyboard and increase the contrast to see if that is causing me not to see the display screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It can't be adjusted. The laptop either needs a screen or inverter.
