Windows Mobile 6.1 SMS Storage

I have a HP iPAQ running Windows Mobile 6.1 which has been "bricked" by third-party backup software! I have my device with the data recovery company we use at work at the moment who are looking at whether we can extract the data from the onboard memory, however does anyone know how Windows Mobile 6.1 stores its SMS data (this is what I'm interested in - everything else is backed up) and whether it can be recovered when the device is unable to boot.

As per the post in social.msdn,

You can copy pim.vol file and paste it back to other device to get messages. You need to close message/contacts process before pasting, otherwise u will get file in use error.
