  • Questions about setting up RAID 5 on a new PE 2950

Hi everybody, new member, first post! I've been browsing trying to find a solution to my problem, but so far no luck so i thought i'd ask. This seems overly simple yet is evading me. We bought a new server, Dell PE 2950, 4 300gb SAS 10K 3.5 drives in it, PERC 6i internal, no operating system...

  • 3 of 4 hard drives for RAID 5?

I know the minimum required is 3, but I remember hearing somewhere you should always go with at least 4 to make up for space taken up by parity. Are there any other advantages to having 4 instead of 3? Thanks..

  • RAID 1 VS 5

Dear storage experts: If two drives fail in RAID 1 all data is lost (that would be "all, both" of them fail). If any two drives fail in RAID 5 then all data is lost. Assuming that any given drive has a 1 in 250 chance of failing, then the odds of either RAID 1 or 5 failing is 1 in 62,000 (if...

  • Defragging a RAID 5

Simple question... perhaps a more complicated answer: Is defragging a RAID 5 array good, bad or a useless waste of time??? My guess would be that it's a waste of time because of the data scattering nature of RAID 5. Jared

Adabtec 2100S Raid card One of our hard drives went down which brought our raid down to degraded status. We ordered a replacement hd of the exact same model. • Determining Stripe Size in RAID 5

I read a post by magarity http://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Q_20645422.html suggesting that in determining your optimum stripe size you should find out your average file size and then divide this by the number of drives you have in your RAID, minus the parity drive, and presto: you now have a good...
